Adam Strain Building
Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation: Marguerite Williams Award 2025
2025 AIA Savannah Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
The Adam Strain Building represents a thoughtful restoration of one of Georgia’s oldest surviving tabby commercial structures. Constructed between 1813 and 1818 along the Darien River, the building originally served as a cotton warehouse and ship chandlery, reflecting the region’s early mercantile history.
The project focused on stabilizing and preserving the original tabby walls while integrating a discreet structural system to ensure long-term use. Carefully restrained interventions maintain the building’s historic character while allowing it to serve a renewed public purpose along the waterfront.
